Ownership and sublicensing
What transferable and sublicensable distribution rights mean, and what they do not authorize.
Updated Sep 26, 2026
Do I still own my music?
Yes. Artists retain ownership of their original music, recordings, and associated intellectual property, subject to the licenses you grant in the Distribution Terms and any Distribution Agreement you accept.
Rythora operates as a music distribution service. Uploading to Rythora is not a transfer of ownership of your masters or compositions.
What do "transferable" and "sublicensable" rights mean?
To deliver your releases, Rythora needs permission to host, encode, and send your content to digital service providers (DSPs) and other distribution partners you authorize.
Under the Distribution Terms, you grant Rythora a worldwide, non-exclusive, transferable and sublicensable license to use your content as needed to operate Distribution and deliver to DSPs and partners you authorize.
In practice, that covers the technical and contractual steps required for distribution, such as:
- Packaging and delivering releases to streaming and download platforms
- Working with authorized distribution partners in the delivery chain
- Keeping content available while it remains distributed through Rythora, plus a commercially reasonable wind-down after takedown or account closure
Can Rythora license my music for other commercial uses without my permission?
The Distribution license is for operating Distribution and delivering to authorized DSPs and partners. It is not described as a blanket grant for unrelated commercial exploitation.
Synchronization licensing (for example film, television, advertisements, or third-party commercial campaigns) and other commercial uses outside authorized distribution should be handled under a separate agreement and explicit authorization.
If you are asked to grant sync or other non-distribution rights, treat that as a separate opt-in, not as something automatically included because you distributed a release.
Where is the official wording?
- Distribution Terms
- Your accepted Distribution Agreement in Workstation under Account → Agreement
If product marketing and your accepted agreement ever differ on the same point, the agreement you accepted controls for that commercial term.
